ABSTRACT
Introdução: A pertinência, a necessidade e o ritmo de abertura de novos cursos de graduação na área da saúde, particularmente dos cursos de medicina, têm sido objeto de acalorados debates. Foram desenvolvidos, recentemente, vários estudos, por diferentes atores, sobre o panorama da atual situação dos cursos de medicina no Brasil, o que demonstra a preocupação com o tema. Torna-se imperioso avançar nessa reflexão. Métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão de estudos recentes sobre a situação dos cursos de medicina no Brasil. Resultados: Verificou-se que o processo de expansão dos cursos de medicina acompanha a ampliação do ensino universitário no Brasil, identificando-se duas grandes ondas de crescimento. A primeira delas foi vinculada ao setor público e a segunda à iniciativa privada. Observa-se uma expansão da oferta de cursos e vagas, principal- mente a partir da década de 90, em todas as regiões do país, con- centrando-se nas regiões Sudeste e Sul e com forte predominância das instituições privadas. Considerações Finais: Acredita-se que os resultados encontrados devem ser analisados à luz das necessidades, prioridades e desafios para a implementação e consolidação do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), remetendo também à discussão acerca da necessidade de mudanças na educação médica, de modo a contribuir para a constituição de um sistema de monitoramento e regulação da abertura de cursos e vagas para a graduação em medicina.
Introduction: The pertinence, need and pace in which new graduate health-relared courses are being opened, particularly medicine courses, have been the object of intense debates. Recently, several studies have been developed by different authors on the current situation of the medicine courses in Brazil, which dernon- strates the concern on the theme. Ir is of the utrnost importance that we go further in this reflection, Methods: A revision was carried out of recent studies on the situation of medicine courses in Brazil. Results: It was verified that the expansion of medicine courses follows the expansion of university teaching in Brazil. Two great expansion waves were identified: the first related to the public sector and the second resulting from the entrance of the private initiative in the education field. An expansion in the offer of courses and vacancies can be observed, mainly as of the 90' s, in all regions of the country, though concentrated in the Southeast and South regions, with great predominance of private institutions, Conclusions: Ir is believed thar the results found should be analyzed in the light of the needs, priorities, challenges for implementation and consolidation of rhe Sistema Único de Saúde (National Health System SUS), also referring to the discussion about the need to change the medical education so as to contribute to the constitution of a monitoring and regulation system for the opening of o and vacancies for graduation in medicine.
